I was never much of a manicure person. In fact, I never really enjoyed it because I hate getting my nails filed. It feels like literal nails on a chalkboard. Ughh. And manicurists hate me because my hands clench from the scrape, scrape, scrape back and forth of the nail file. And they, in their Far East accent (read: Asian), try to calm me down with “relaaax meesuz” and laugh at how silly I am for getting tense from a mere manicure (it’s supposed to be a pampering experience. Allegedly anyway).
So much of my life was spent bare tipped. But a few years ago, fresh from a bad breakup, I needed a change. While the psychological damage of an emotional ending to a relationship usually leads to women doing something really drastic like chopping off their hair or changing up their makeup, I decided to go relieve my pain with some nail color. Of course that meant facing my aversion to nail filing, but I soon remembered that a manicure involved heavenly hand massages and so I was hooked.
Getting my nails done on a regular basis felt liberating. My ex liked my nails bare so having them cut and painted to perfection was me letting go of any ownership he still had over me. It was me finding my voice through the haze of disappointment, pain, and frustration. And although following a strict regimen of filing, moisturizing, and painting is far from the freedom my nailbeds once enjoyed in my lackadaisical nude days of yore, it felt good to take care of myself.
But of course, getting a manicure on a weekly basis (or twice-weekly if you’re like me and do dishes without gloves and so more frequent touch ups are necessary) can get expensive and time-consuming. Which is why I’ve slowly began trying to learn how to paint my nails myself.
In the beginning of my dabbling in the art of polishing ones nails, I screwed up. A lot. The first tries were filled with messy finishes, glutinous polish junked up in a puffy glob, and color stained all over my skin. But I finally have come to a point where I’m a little more comfortable using nail polish on my own and so hopefully won’t need to go to the nail salon as often as I used to (although getting that hand massage just might tempt me…).
In searching for more creative ways to decorate my nails, I’ve been searching youtube for some nail art tutorials. In doing so, I found this AMAZING user called CutePolish. What makes her unique is that her designs are different, fun, and wildly creative. And a plus is that she always has the perfect nail art for every occasion…literally! For example, for your upcoming Christmas party, she shows you how to do the perfect Santa Hat which you know all your friends will just die over!! So check her out, you won’t be disappointed.
